According to House Method’s recent survey, bathrooms are the most popular home renovation project in the United States. This is music to my ears because bathroom remodels are so much fun! From the tile design to the vanity lighting to the wallpaper, there are tons of ways that you can personalize your bathroom and make it your own. Bathrooms are also spaces where you can experiment and be bold — they’re separate from the rest of the home which makes it a little easier to be playful and have fun with your design choices.
As we head into the new year, I wanted to highlight a trend that is super popular and does a lot to transform the look of your bathroom: wallpaper! I’m not talking about the tacky stuff from the 1970s and 1980s — the stuff we swore to stay away from forever. I’m talking about luxurious textures, prints, and patterns that make the wallcoverings of yesteryear look like cheap wrapping paper.
While it’s true that trends come and go, there are always a few exceptional finds that become the new classics. If you’re planning a bathroom remodel for your home, here are my favorite picks for a trend that promises a lot of staying power and delivers major bang for your buck!
Go Bold with Blue and Gold
Large, patterns are perfect for compact bathrooms. While it may seem counterintuitive, oversized patterns in small spaces make a bigger visual impact!
I chose Thibaut’s Indian Flower in Spa Blue for the wallpaper in my own bathroom (left) and paired it with the Shea wall sconce by Mitzi for Hudson Valley Lighting Group and the Kohler Purist faucet and Kohler sink. York Wallcovering’s French Marigold in Blue and Gold was used for a recent powder bath remodel (right). As you can see, blue and gold are a classic combination!
A New Spin on Yellow, Green and Brown
Yellow, green and brown are colors that don’t generally get a lot of love. They’re colors that were very popular in the late 70s and early 80s, but they’ve been out of fashion for a few decades. I’m happy to tell you that they’re back and ready to party!
I chose Thibaut’s Tiverton wallpaper in yellow for the a remodeling project in Green Bay (left) that was in keeping with the green and yellow Green Bay Packers “cheese heads” theme for the home.
For the Colorado bathroom remodel (right), we were inspired by the natural landscape and decided to go with Schumacher’s Chenonceau in Charcoal to complete the woodland theme.
March To Your Own Beat
The most important thing to remember when choosing a wallpaper for your bathroom remodel is to choose what you like — not what is necessarily trendy. Choose patterns and colors that appeal to your own sense of style and make you light up when you walk into the room.
For this downstairs bath we went with a fun print that no one expected. Who would have every thought that this adorable Nautilus goldfish wallpaper from Cole & Son could turn a small powder bath into the jewel box of the house?
And there you have it! My favorite wallpaper prints and thoughts on how you can make your bathroom become the star of the show.
